One of our pastors, Chucho, brought us to witness and pray for his neighbor, Josefina, who was “very sick.” Britt and Chucho hiked through the jungle to an impoverished hut, where they faced a cold, almost hostile, reception from the sick woman’s husband. She was seated behind a wall made of plastic sheeting, with only the tips of her fingers visible.
Britt began to tell her of the love of Jesus and she accepted Him into her heart. Through the course of the conversation, Britt inched his way closer to the plastic barrier till he could look at Josefina. His heart went out to her. White patches, scabs and scars covered her face and hands. Gently, Britt asked if she had leprosy. She told him she did. Britt and Chucho invited her to come out from where she was hiding her face, and they laid their hands on her, asking Jesus to heal her body. Josefina began to come to Chucho’s house for church every week, sneaking in the back after dark and listening to the life-giving message of Jesus from the dark kitchen. She would venture up to the edge of the light at the end of the night, head down and face and hands covered, to receive prayer. At church two months later, Josefina walked in the front door of the house, in broad daylight, and approached Britt directly. “I am healed, and I can see!” she declared. Her face and her hands were clean, her eyes clear and unafraid. Britt learned she had been almost completely blind, and Jesus had not only given her new skin, but new eyes. Jesus had cleansed her. Jesus is alive. Life and peace, Britt and Audrey Hancock The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor.
