"Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank." Proverbs 22:29

The second most common reason that missionaries quit the mission field is a lack of preparation or an unwillingness to cope with the hardship and adversity that come with living and ministering in a foreign culture. In this generation of young people, many have not worked with their hands, so we have a time of intensive training to facilitate the learning of these practical skills.
Innovation and Problem Solving is at the forefront of our teaching philosophy. Society today is full of instant gratification and dependency upon others to fix every issue that arises. We believe in teaching students how to critically and logically think through issues to reach a solution. On the mission field, there is often no one around to ask for help. The power of God, a sound mind and preparation are our greatest tools to counter the problems that will arise. |
Students learn to troubleshoot issues related to the basics of auto mechanics, the operation of heavy and lightweight machinery and vehicles (i.e. tractors, trucks, stick shift, paddling canoes, etc), and off-road driving and vehicle recovery. The building science intensive will focus on things like framing, electrical, plumbing, roofing, drywall and masonry. They will learn how to use hand tools and the basics of welding, chainsaw operation, and wood cutting tools, along with a bow and knife making section that will teach attention to detail and technical competency.
We also teach accounting and bookkeeping, along with home economics classes and an etiquette course. The proper management of a home is not only scriptural, but also increases a missionary's effectiveness and longevity for the gospel. The etiquette course is based on demonstration of respect, preparing students for whatever environment the Lord calls them to minister within.
All of these skills can be useful in other countries. Mountain Gateway believes that there is a connection between your hands, your head, your heart and your spirit.
Heart. Mind. Body. Strength.
They are interrelated, and during the Technical Skills Semester our missionaries learn to tie them all together.
